from what i understand, the manga of this series more or less failed in Japan but was very popular in China, hence the adaptation by bilibili?

jack • 1 year ago

Kadokawa is known for dark anime, I see them in credits. But it probably came off too comedic, too pg-13, which doesn't fly in Japan for a dark anime genre...non animated tv series have similar dark streaks for which gore & twistedness is intentional and much the competition. I tend to not favor too much darkness, so this fits my bill.

Yeap • 1 year ago

kadokawa? dark anime? Whaaaaaat? Isn't kadokawa the producer of some of that seasonal isekai trash that everyone including me still watches because we have are desperate for the chance of another good isekai to ogle over? Gee whiz I never knew

You learn something new every day

Bemorn • 1 year ago

The novel also got a manhua adaptation, and the character designs in this anime are closer to the ones in the manhua.

This is a genuinely good series. All that hate from episode 1 comment section is unwarranted.

Im glad this isnt that annoying 3d thing that chinese studios like doing. Traditional anime style is best. If they made more series like this, they'd get a much wider (and wealthier) foreign fanbase.

Also, i was hoping they woukd adress the source of Reiko's weird powers. I wouldnt be surprised if she us secretly the demon-lord's daughter. lol

They do sort of go into Reiko's powers, but only further down the line. The LN/manga is already complete.

Riko • 1 year ago

its just the Chinese tradition style where they focus on the realism instead of 2D art animation, dont forget that they are both different countries theyre not same and also some people dont always hate the 3D type of animation honestly its based on how Chinese tradition want to put their own type of style in animation

Trefle • 1 year ago

So glad someone said it! I may not *always* like 3d, but I really like that different countries have different art styles. It's a nice change and a good choice to have.

SenicAsianRoute • 10 months ago

nothing wrong with 3D a ton of those are dope though I watch the cell shaded ones more often

Stay strong, dragon bro. We'll rescue you from your homicidal kidnapper one of these days.

Why did subber change it from Rinzu to reiko? That sucks ngl

Jyuan • 1 year ago

Reiko is the correct name. Same with the manga and light novel

They are still saying Rinzu in anime so what was in manga and LN doesn't really matter

PettankoLovingCunnyseur • 1 year ago

Lingzi is the Chinese pronunciation, but obviously, the LN, being written by a Japanese author, would say Reiko. The dub says Lingzi because the actors are Chinese, and that's the closest in Chinese.

Guestman Jack • 1 year ago

Still strange to use a different written name instead of the spoken one. Not to say this is the first time this happens, but it never felt like a good localisation.

PettankoLovingCunnyseur • 1 year ago

Thing is, I don't want a Japanese work about the Three Kingdoms to use "Sousou", instead of "Cao Cao", either. If it takes place in historical China, it shouldn't matter if the voice actors are Japanese. This is basically that but opposite.

PettankoLovingCunnyseur • 1 year ago

There's a reason why that there are 2 versions of Kingdom. One has the hanzi names subbed like they are pronounced as kanji. One has the hanzi names subbed like they should as hanzi names. All I want is the opposite for the series.

PettankoLovingCunnyseur • 1 year ago

The original author is Japanese, while the cast is Chinese. Japanese has katakana, romaji, etc. while Chinese only has hanzi (called kanji in Japanese), so they have to use words for the western named characters that sound as similar as possible to those western names, so we get stuff, like Lai Aode, instead of Ryatt. Of course, actually trying to translate those names back into western script makes things even worse, like Allah Gold, instead of Anakin, in Backstroke of the West/Revenge of the Sith. For Japanese names that are written in kanji to begin with, this is OK, but from what I can see, despite sounding like it could, Reiko's name is katakana, not kanji, but for the Chinese translation, they changed her katakana name into the closest possible kanji name and then pronounced the whole thing as if it were hanzi to begin with.

Riko • 1 year ago

probably this is because they are switching the name translation since there isnt an exact correct translated name for her

Icyani • 1 year ago

by any chance - is she the demon lord or saughter of the demon lord perhaps because having all those powers? I wonder...

Etrancical • 1 year ago

This is already proving to be a really great anime! A unique premise, and interesting execution, and just the continuous rolling of plot regardless. It just seems like top tier.

And I’ve watched several hundreds of hours of Chinese anime, so the dub doesn’t really seem out of place to me.

Biig Woonie • 1 year ago

this anime is a gem i never thought i would find

hehe! yup, ep1 was fun and ep2 validates that finding! :D

the JP dub just misses the atmosphere that the Dragon an Child are supposed to have it sounds like she is desperate to sound scary but in the OG she just has a direct personality
